What to expect as a judge in the JA RING

This is an email sent to Harley to describe what had happened in the past JA ring.g.  Please email your Regional Liaison if if you have any questions or suggestions.

Hi Harley,

This is still so new, I wanted to briefly let you know what occurred at the first ring.  Thank so much for jumping right in and helping us test and refine the judging portion of the Junior Achiever program.  Let me know anything that you feel should be added or what we can do to make it easier for the next judge.

Fate sat at the side of the table like where a clerk would sit and afterwards felt he should have sat in the front so the Junior Achievers would be speaking forward and not looking to the side toward him.

Fate has done this once before in Denver and seemed very comfortable.

He called for the ring at his discretion.

We will have the numbers ready for the JA ring. (we have blank laminated number cards to write with erasable marker the JA entries. We do not have to interfer with the Ring clerk's cards by pulling the different numbers out of their cards.  This is done as soon as we find the entries and ready to go when the judge calls for the ring)

Ribbons for each JA will be there. (order new, get sponsors or recycle and just order center ribbons or make new centers) We try to keep costs down.

We will have the kid's names and info on the judging sheets dot matrix in triplicate. (see at http://www.justcats.org/TICAJA/JAEvaluationForm.html )  Sherry Kern donated a case of these for us and keeps them ready for us.  Not everyone has a dot matrix printer.

He briefly introduced the concept to the audience with the kids in the front row.  You can call the numbers up any way you wish.  We have since learned to call the most experienced kids up first so that the newer ones can see what is going on from them.

We have let the kids know that they can introduce themselves and their cats.  Some will plow right on through a presentation, but most will run out of steam and get lost.  Many have had several practices and a ring at OBC, but it is still very new. We will try to run them through another quick practice early Sat am.  They should be able to explain what the judge looks for in their breed or hhp. However, Fate also asked questions as they presented, especially if they needed prompting.  For example,  he asked what was special about a certain breed that they were showing.  One junior looked like a deer in headlights.  However, that was a viable question...the JA could have said anything from the country they were from to something cute that the cat did at home.  You will recognize when to prompt or when to give up..lol  The hhp person should know why the nails are clipped and ears checked and what you are looking for. They should be acquainted with their basic standards. You will see who is comfortable to go deeper and who to let by easier.  When they are finished, they should put their cat back into the cage and clean the table for the next JA.

If the cats are called to other rings, we try to listen and quietly prompt the JA to go to that ring or we will have someone quietly remove a cat not being shown at that time to get it to and from another judging ring.

After they all show, everyone is presented with a rosette and the ring dismissed.  At this point they are all equal since they all participated. There was a good sized enthusiastic audience at the first ring and I expect the same for you.  This is also your moment to share your nuggets of important information to the kids, too.

Fate calculated his own results after dismissing the ring, but we can or you can.  We do not give the kids the score you tabulate since they tend to look like grades.  Deborah Mordente (SC JA Liaison) will get a copy and you can keep a copy if you want.  Your suggestions on how to make the  the form better for judges are welcomed. We do not want a tie, so you will have to decide one over the other if they have a tie on the score.  You can decide to give out the 1st, 2nd and 3rd or you can turn the scores to us and we will take care of it.  I asked a bunch of Judges at the OBC show if they had a problem with us announcing the results over the speaker and they all felt it would be fine.  Just let us know how we can help.  You can call the winners back to your ring, or we will announce them and take care of it.

I will bring you a list of questions that they should know in the first step that you can ask each JA one or two.  You will know.  It was fun to watch the kids on this one. Questions are like why are nails clipped?  What does TICA stand for?  Who is the president of TICA?  and many more..  they were well prepared, but I gave them a list of  the questions and answers for their first show.  The questions are in their notebooks, but no answers from me this time.
